Movie Thoughts – The Prestige (2006)

Movie Thoughts   This movie is about two magicians that compete to determine which has the best magic trick (you can read more about it here). I found it interesting how we can get obsessed in pursuing something we think we want and because of this obsession we don’t realize what we’re sacrificing along the way.

Yes, pursuing your goals require sacrifices we are willing to pay if the goal is big enough for us, but how do we determine what we should sacrifice and what we shouldn’t? What’s important for me now might not be as important for me next year. Why? Because I evolved. But what if I sacrifice now something I don’t think it’s that important and I’ll realize next year that I made a big mistake? Yeah, surely I can deal with it and move on, but the regret and the questions will remain for a while.

But what if that importance change again in two years? I know, it’s such of a mood swing, but I think that it might happen. This makes me wonder if I am that shallow or it’s something else here.

My point is that whenever we find something big enough for us to pursuit, we should do it because if it’s truly important it won’t change over time. Also, we need to realize that we have to make sacrifices along the way and we need to keep in our minds the bigger picture, the goal for us to move forward and to keep the regret to a minimum value (maybe to zero).

It’s a very interesting movie that has multiple perspectives about how and why people behave and you’ll see that a good goal is as motivating as a bad one and in the end you might not be able which one is good and which one is bad.

  1. This is by far one of my ultimate favorite movies. The concept of it was phenomenal. I enjoyed your article tying the two together and showing how sacrifice can lead to great reward.
