Movie Thoughts – Shutter Island (2010)

Movie Thoughts   This movie is about a U.S. Marshal that investigates the disappearance of a murderer from a special facility (you can read more about it here). Or is it? It has a surprising evolution.

It’s one of my favorite movies and it kinda shocked me when I watched it for the first time (not long after it came out). I remembered about it today and now it makes total sense about why I like it so much: it’s all a matter of perspective. We can be the hero of our life or the villain. It’s all a matter of how we’re looking at it and we do it based on our past.

We sometimes do things that are so right for us, but we don’t know why we’re actually doing those things. It might be something we did in our past and it helped us so much that we developed a habit. Why? Well, maybe we did it to get over a trauma. Or maybe we did it because we couldn’t forgive ourselves for something we shouldn’t have done.

Have you noticed that sometimes, when you create a powerful lie and you’re telling it often, you forget after a while that it’s just a lie? It becomes part of your experience and it has the ability to influence you just like a real experience, except for the fact that you made it up.

    1. It is, isn’t it? It’s the most powerful thing we could ever have… the question is: what are we going to do with it?

  1. I haven’t seen the movie, but the novel it was based on left something to be desired, to me. Maybe the filmmaker improved on the book (which is usually a rarity in Hollywood).

    1. I haven’t read the novel, but the movie had me thinking. I guess I should try the novel and you could try the movie 😀
