This movie is about a small village that it is isolated from the rest of the world because it’s surrounded by a forest full of strange creatures ready to attack anyone that tries to leave (you find more about it here). It’s not as animated with action as it might seem, but it has a surprising outcome.
There are two ideas that got stuck in my mind. The first one is about the difference between how people feel and how they behave. Sometimes we do the opposite of what we feel. Why? Maybe we have reasons to hide how we feel and behaving the opposite of that might help us overcome those feelings. Or maybe we’re too afraid and we think that we would be refused and we try to keep our distance from the people we have feelings for.
The second idea is about how people in charge treat their followers. I won’t say that they treat them good or bad, but they treat them based on their own beliefs. If they really think they try to do the best for the good of that community, they are prepared to do whatever it takes. The problem is that some of those actions are not quite moral, even though the actions are “for the good of community”.

I wasn’t surprised with the twist because that is what M Night Shyamalan does in all his movies. I don’t remember all the details because I watched after it came out, but I remember the blind girl out on the porch after the creature was out.. I remember I really disliked everything about Joaquin Phoenix up to that point in his career, but when he took hand and got her to safety my entire opinion of him changed.
For me it was surprising because I was not familiar with his work. Yes, it was great that he took her hand and got her to safety. 🙂
I enjoyed it, although the twist was not where I expected things to go. I’m thinking I need to watch this again, because I don’t recall the backstory as to *why* this village is set up within a game preserve, as it were.

I have an issue with movie trailers that mislead the audience. I know it’s a way to surprise an you with the plot and ending. That being said I went to see The Village because I thought it was strictly a horror movie. Though it was interesting to a point, and a twist ending I would not call it a horror movie.
In my opinion, it wasn’t that horror, at least not for what it clearly shows, but more about some implied ideas.
