Movie Thoughts – Stardust (2007)

“In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he’ll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.” – IMDb

This movie has a special place in my heart because it’s the first movie me and my wife watched together and now we have yearly tradition to watch it in that day.

What I find interesting about this movie is how many things in life we can lose if we don’t have our eyes open. The main dude from the movie went in a journey to bring a star to the girl he thought he loved, but the star was another girl. Nevertheless, he was determined to bring that girl-star to the girl he loved (that would have been an interesting scene). The dude and the girl-star went through lots of things together and they fell in love. I tend to search deeper aspects and lessons in each movie so here it comes.

We can start a certain path in life, but we end up on another and we can only do it if we are present enough to realize that the new path is more appropriate for us. Have you ever thought about why we suffer so much when we lose someone or something? It’s probably because we’re taking it for granted and somehow we think it will be there always so we don’t really enjoy that person or that thing. We’re just not living in the present most of the time and because of this we can lose so many moments in life.

Another interesting thing is how sh*t can strengthen relations. People get more connected when they go through things together, especially when they go through bad things. This happens because we need support when we go through bad times, not when we go through good times. When everything is good, is easy to live. When a crappy mountain is ahead, it’s harder to live by ourselves and receiving support in those moments is much more appreciated compared to the support we receive when we eat ice cream on a beach (I’m pretty sure we can beat that ice cream by ourselves).

The lesson I’ve learned is that I need to appreciate the present. It’s nothing wrong with thinking about the past, but I believe we need to keep that to a minimum. As for the future, I made a plan and I act on it. Today. Also, the person you walk with through hell needs to be much more appreciated because you cannot fake a hell-walk. That’s f*ckin’ real.

What’s your opinion about these ideas and about this movie?

  1. Indeed that’s a special movie. 🤗 I liked a lot this phrase from your article: “The person you walk with through hell needs to be much more appreciated because you cannot fake a hell-walk. That’s f*ckin’ real.”

  2. I like your ideas as usual. It’s necessary as a couple to go through tough times in order to grow and get on a deeper level. Watching movies together might create distance sometimes, because spouses don’t focus on each other or they do not communicate. But some couples use a great movie as something which connects them more. It’s great if the favourite person comments the movie and reflects about it in a deeper way. The movie then is an introduction for deeper thoughts and great communication. Great tradition to watch that movie together which was the first one! Great thoughts so far

  3. I think everyone is guilty of not opening their eyes and living in the present, I know I am. We often don’t see or realise what is in front of us as we are too busy chasing something we think we want.
I love this film, I read the book first and the film is fantastic, I also love the fact you guys watch it together.
    😊

    1. I love it too! It seems that we as humans cannot help ourselves from thinking about what we don’t have. This is one of the reasons why practicing gratitude from time to time can be helpful.

  4. I also read the book first. The movie version was ok, though I’ve only seen it once

In the story Tristan is in love with Victoria who clearly doesn’t love him and is happy to send him on a wild goose chase to find the fallen star, even though she doesn’t care if he finds it or not. He meets Yvaine, the fallen star, and they journey back, but it is clearly her that is better suited to him than Victoria, but he is so blinded for his love for Victoria he doesn’t see that at the time, though eventually he realises this. What I get out of this, for me, is that sometimes the person you should be with and who may be good for you may not be the obvious one. For example, the people I fall in love with are not usually people that would be any good for me, and maybe I should be considering other factors when looking for someone to share my life with…

    1. I don’t think that we realize what we need when we fell in love. There are certain aspects we like about that certain person whilst we ignore others which might be more important, but we just don’t realize it because “love is blind”. This is also related to our self esteem, our frustrations, our issues and we somehow think that the person we fell in love with is the missing piece of our lives. This is a tough problem…

  5. One of my favorite books of all time!

For me, one of the most important take-aways from the book is opening up to the magic of everyday life… When we expect something specific, we might lose the magic that it potentially holds because we can only restrict something real with how we think about that. Thinking of a fallen star as a rock is challenged when we find out that this fallen star is in fact a woman. And of course, this can take us to how objectifying humans works. When we conceptualise them we lose something from their amazing potential that can only be discovered if we are open to the enigma that they are… “Encountering a human being is like being kept awake by an enigma” like Levinas says.

So I hope you will hold that magic quality with your wife and not take each other for granted – you are so much more than what can be seen! Love the personal element and wish you the best!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes, we should all be open to magic daily because we can get so blinded by routine…

  6. this time I’ve watched this movie 😊
i’m still enjoy watching the movie whenever one of the TV channel played it. the story line is quite simple, and it’s funny. For me this movie is about not believing the first impression, and always be open minded, to have a wider point of view in judging people. And family comes first, tough sometimes wealth and power can make some people heartless.

  7. I love it when the Star does what Stars do “best” – and shines. I think it’s what we should all do. Also, greed will get you shanked. Great flick!

  8. My wife and I love this movie. Your observations are right about how we can make the mistake of making snap judgements and decisions – I know that I have, in relationships and actions. I like Neil Gaiman and one day, I must re-read the book that inspired the film.
