  1. “The day I no longer need to gather anymore knowledge is the day of my funeral”… 🙂

“Any piece of knowledge I acquire today has a value at this moment exactly proportioned to my skill to deal with it. Tomorrow, when I know more, I will recall that piece of knowledge and use it better. “ Mark van Doren

  2. quit smoking tip:
if you’re craving, tell yourself you can have 1 in 5 minutes. Usually at around 5 minutes, the craving fades, or you forget about it.

  3. I had to really really think about this one. No one close to me ever shared words of wisdom, they were usually examples of what not to do.

My eight grade English teacher had a reputation of being a hard ass. She followed the rules and simple expected everyone else to do the same. It wasn’t till I took her class that I realized she was an amazing woman. She would tell us all kinds of stories from her life and she cared about the kids. She didn’t just show up but she asked how we were doing in other classes and tried to help us. She had this one saying that might seem hillbilly or country and certainly won’t ever be quoted but I still admire her to this day. What she said made me cry and coming from where I came it was the complete opposite of what I was used to hearing. She looked at each and everyone of us in her little class and she said. Don’t hang your head for nobody and don’t look down at the ground because there is nothing there but dirt. Basically she was telling us that even though we might have thought we were nothing we had just as much right to feel special as anyone else.

    1. What a great teacher! We all have amazing potential we’re not even aware of. If we let other people decide what potential we have, we get nowhere…

  4. Never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do, or haven’t done in the past. (Dad, referring to employer-employee, but generalizes nicely, I think.)

  5. As a new teacher many, many years ago, my mentor teacher told me to never take anything a student says personal. I believe it is that advice that has allowed me to teach for 25 plus years…and I am still in the classroom! Thank you T. Steinlage!

  6. A fencing teacher said:

If I’m not talking about fencing, I’m probably *lying* to you.

General idea, people who know something don’t necessarily know everything. I think Socrates said something about that.

      1. Exactly! I always try to be kind to others, since I want them to be kind to me. However, I don’t want to be overly-friendly because then they might take advantage of that friendliness.

  7. My dad (may his soul rest in peace) said to me once, randomly, when i was really young that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside so your inside has to be beautiful for you to be beautiful.

  8. U deserve the best ! Bcoz u r the best ! Dont care about the world ! Love yourself ! Accept yourself the way you are ….. everything will be fine…..have hope !

  9. My Mom told me to respect my health and be kind.
A high school teacher said there is a time to have fun and a time to grow up.
A manager told me to let go of what I know and pass it on to others to make room for all the new stuff she wanted me to learn and do.
A voice inside me said I better stop drinking before I kill myself.

    1. These are indeed great advises! The last one seems to be a re-affirmation of the first one. You really need to take care with this. Is drinking a problem for you?

      1. It was when I was a young man. As I say to some people. I drank enough for a lifetime by the time I was 26 when I stopped for many decades. I have a social one very rarely now.

  10. The best advice I got, was by my wife when I came home 3 hours late and she met me with a cast iron skillet upside my head. But I never came home later after that. Cast iron hurts. My wonderful mother is to be thanked for that! Wowsers…

    1. Just a little FYI, as a healthcare professional, I don’t pay any attention if someone is wearing clean underwear. 😊 My main priority is taking care of my patient. 😎

  11. Something I keep reminding myself is to take care of yourself. Put yourself first so you can take care of those around you. If you put 100% into you, you can put 100% into others. Respect and love yourself because what you think of yourself shows it’s true colors to others. And always remain humble.

      1. Well, some of it I had to learn the hard way. When I got older I also realized to take the advice of others who I respect. We are never too old to learn and become a better version of who we were yesterday. 😊

  12. I have two:

“You can’t pour from an empty cup.” Pretty much saying that you can’t give yourself to others if you have nothing left to give. Self-care is important!

“Don’t make mountains out a of a molehill.” My dad told me that when my preteen self took everything so dramatically.

      1. Self care I practice at least once a week – I’m a people pleaser so it’s something I have to remind myself of. Making mountains out of mole hills doesn’t happen to me like it used to so when it does, I remind myself to breathe.
