  1. I excel under pressure. I don’t know why but I do. My thinking gets clearer and I can get things done. Weird! I know! I prefer to be busy. If it’s slow, my mind tends to wander.

  2. I don’t know about environment. I can work pretty much anywhere. When I was writing stories as long as I had my notebook with me I literally wrote everywhere. As far as what makes my heart zing and makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something that would involve my children. When I take care of them and can meet their needs then I feel like I’ve accomplished something.

      1. They definitely keep me going. I get signs all the time when I am caring for them or doing something extra nice that it’s exactly what I should be doing. I think they are my purpose and I’m raising them to have a better life than I did and better than anyone else on that family tree. I don’t think about my ability to focus. I grew up in an extremely extremely abusive home so I simply had to learn how to tune out some things in order to survive. A little noise nowadays is nothing compared to what it used to be.

  3. For me productivity doesn’t come from a place, but more so from what’s in the place. I can work just about anywhere all I need is the right music. Music touches my soul and opens up al sorts of creative windows for me.

  4. It really depends on the task. In general, I prefer at least a little pressure. If things are too easy, I can easily become complacent and focus on other things instead. That’s what happens when you give an artist too much freedom 😉 they run wild.

Now, that being said, as a writer, I NEED that freedom. If I’m going to write something good, I need to be alone in a quiet environment, with minimal interruptions and loose deadlines. Tension immediately kills my writing buzz.

  5. i do most of my production while being screamed at by little people. i wonder, has it now become a required element now for me to be productive? an unfortunate side effect of being “forced” to produce in that environment?
if i were in a quiet & peaceful place, would my production falter.
of course, my knee jerk response to your question was, “six feet under.” you know, producing gases & fertilizer…. but that thought process might also be an unfortunate side effect of my current environment….
    sigh.

    1. I’m not sure if it’s a requirement or it just became a habit because that’s your current work environment. I think you can be productive in a quiet and peaceful place as long as you care about what you’re doing.

  6. Surrounded by (not so buggy) nature or in solitude of my home. No kids, no husband, sometimes no dog (nah, she’s not that bad lol). When I was a SAHM, I would sit in my car or in the corner of my walk in closet and write.

  7. I would have to say I’m more productive at home. I have some work from home days and downtown days. I find myself more focused at home and more relaxed at the same time. But only if I’m doing independent work. In doing things as a team I like and find that face to face office time is best and more rewarding.

    1. Yes, I agree with you! Team projects require face to face meetings to make sure the communication is at highest as possible. It seems that you’re more productive when you’re more relaxed, right?

      1. In most cases yes, but my group deals with emergencies so the most productive time is responding and fixing them. Its not relaxed at all but we are the calmest ones. During that you have to be technically fast, right and juggle a few directors who are like children in a car saying “are we there” over and over. So those brief burst are when we are at our peak. But yes generally when relaxed things flow better.

  8. Its not so much where, but when. I have 5 children and a husband. Most of my house is monopolized and busy during waking hours. So, as I am a night person anyway, if I need to do a lot of work quickly I wake up at 3am and work while they’re all sleeping.

  9. Lately, I haven’t been very productive. There are several factors that are hindering me from being the productive person that I once was.

But to answer the Question of the Day; I always felt more productive in a very busy environment, i.e; cities or high impact environments. Prime example, I served 10yrs in the US Army and during my military career, I grew accustomed to the hectic, but yet highly effective lifestyle of a soldier. Serving in Iraq definitely showed a great display of enthusiasm and the basics of survival/staying alive.

      1. Thank you for responding to my posting.

Unfortunately, I’m no longer in the ARMY. Not a day goes by, where I think about the times in the service, the way that soldiers push themselves and others into going above and beyond to do something greater and accomplish goals and contribute to the overall collective objective.

That’s what I miss. Yes, it may be dangerous; other’s would say ‘stupid’, but that same danger that everyone is afraid of, does bring on a sense of “conquering thy fears” “overcoming adversity” “becoming proactive rather than reactive”. I enjoyed the rush of adrenaline of doing things that I’d feared most.

I’ve been out of the ARMY for about 5yrs now and I don’t feel the same way I did when I was in the service. I’ve gotten into ruts of depression, PTSD, and other mental backlashes that plague many veterans. At the same course, there’s real dangers here in the civilian sector, but it isn’t the same.

Overall, I would go back to the ARMY in a heartbeat.

  10. I normally thrive in the library, or anywhere quiet with no one around. I’m exceptionally even more productive at night because usually that’s the only time when I can hear myself think and brainstorming

  11. My room, no one at home, not too hot, not too warm, full but with some space left for a nice tea, usually in the evening or late morning. Sometimes at night is the best hour, but I can’t be noo noisy. Also buses are productivity boosters for me. And libraries too.

      1. Well, not city buses, but for example long-distance buses, like, let’s say, a 4 hour bus ride makes me productive (not every time, and the bus should be a bit empty)

      2. I get that. Actually, right now I’m in a bus on my way home (7 hour bus rode). I finished a book so it counts as productive I guess 🙂

  12. At work: When there’s no commotion around me and it’s quiet.
Home: When I have some help. Doing things alone takes double the time and boring 😀
