  1. The thoughts and feelings that change me into a good person, is happy thoughts, but if someone insults me, i quickly lose my temper! Nice question!!! (First Reply!) 🙂

  2. When I wake up, I thank God for this day. This can really help set me up for a more positive day! And it doesn’t have to be God…it could be any higher power or the Universe!

  3. Thoughts of the beach always lift my spirits/mood. Now that I think about it, all thoughts shift my moods. What day of the week it is, what I think of to cook next, deciding to answer that email from work on my day off or not. It’s great to have thoughts. Even better to act on the positive ones. That keeps the mood moving in the right direction. I’m a slow learner and haven’t always lived by this. What a waste.

  4. I noticed I could shift my thoughts even in childhood. I needed that the most then and it’s the only thing that kept me sane. As a kid I remember standing in line in the cafeteria and people kept cutting in front of me to be with their friends and it made me mad and sad but I didn’t say anything.. I remember standing there feeling really shitty and then I remembered we were going somewhere that weekend and so I had something to be happy about so I thought of it instead of the mean girls. There have been many times where remembering I have something yummy to eat would make me feel better or if I had a favorite show coming on that night. If I was trapped somewhere I didn’t want to be I would try to look past that moment and remind myself that I had something better coming up. Music helps sometimes and I try to write grateful lists to keep me in a happier state of mind but sometimes I’m too upset to do them. So I don’t have a 100% tried and true method.

  5. If I’m in a bad mood, a silly thought like “I’ve got money for extra food tonight” usually gets me going. If I’m in a good mood it’s usually a thought like “remember that one time when you really messed up.”

    1. Oh…I can associate with that thought. Sadly, when the bad moods happen often enough…you begin to feel the “weight” of it. (Sigh!)

  6. Being empathic this is the struggle. Other people’s moods can rub off onto you. I keep positive people around me because if this, you have to be selective in who you associate or at least know when to cut them off if their feelings start to rub off.

When I notice this happening, I distance myself and even pray/meditate to reset.

  7. Any thought. All thoughts. By thinking in the first place, that already shifts my mood to one of contemplation and I am left asking “why?”
Why what? Why anything, depending on the thought.

      1. Definitely. That is when reflecting upon the nature of thought and ideas and thinking. Meta cognition, as opposed to just trying to solve or troubleshoot a quandary.

  8. Usually, thoughts about my country shift my mood for the worse, especially the last few days. The corruption is so bad that they are even talking about it on the news for the first time. Every politician is employing their relatives and friends and it’s pretty much one of the only ways to get a job here these days. Makes me think about my future since I don’t want to join political parties in order to get a job.

  9. Sometimes shifting my thoughts from something hurtful (that happened in the past) to my immediate surroundings – even to mundane tasks like housekeeping or filing helps…mostly because the action associated with the new thought keeps me anchored to it. Thanks for this thought…might write a post about it.

    1. I have been told to never underestimate the power of the bathroom! One reason is because when the negative thoughts take over, cleaning the toilet will help me think of something totally different. Especially if it’s dirty! Also, splashing cold water on my face and neck can help, or dipping my face into a sink filled with cold water kind of resets my thinking.

  10. When I really, really want a mood shift I skip the thoughts and go straight to music. Depending on the mood, either some classical Romantics (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff) or 60s rock (Beatles, Moody Blues).

    1. Music has many powers! For changing my mood, I have noticed that while driving to work, I listen to upbeat, loud, excited music. But when I leave work, I need the classical or someone like Jewel to help me switch gears for the rest of my day. I work at the YMCA in Child Watch. It’s a loud and chaotic atmosphere (I love it! I get paid to play!) However, after a 3 or 4 hour shift, I need to calm my mood down so that I can think and move forward.
