I guess it’s all in how you look at things 🤔. If you’re doing stuff that you want to be doing (even if you’re procrastinating the things you should be doing), then can you really call it being careless? In the end, if you’re not enjoying yourself most of the time, then getting through the hard times would be much much harder 🤗.
I’m going to go out on a limb, and say we don’t know. I’d say we believe because we’ve been told, but we haven’t experienced it. Sometimes the day is short, and sometimes it’s long. That is as much as we know.
It might be related to our emotions? Maybe our emotions drive us through doing or not doing some things regardless the need of them, which leads to spending our time…
Yes one could say we use emotions, and not rationale to choose the best use of our time. We want to be happy.

Hmmmm….after pondering this over, I have come to the conclusion that I have no clue why we do this. I do this, many people I know do this. This is a great question.
I think you’re right…cognitive dissonance. This happens in a lot of other areas – people (myself included) tend to get complacent until something big happens in our life that forces change.

I think it’s partly because we tend to respond to tangible and immediate results. So for example, we know if we walk in front of a car on the highway, it’ll destroy us right then and there, so we don’t do it, but if we smoke cigarettes, we know it’ll destroy us, but ehhh, “I’m gonna die anyways”….so we keep smoking because the consequences don’t immediately strike us.
So knowing that time is limited is something we’re all accustomed to but we don’t know what happens after we die. Plus dying is “in the future”, so we aren’t immediately effected by the fact that time is limited and death is imminent.
That’s why it’s hard for us to “live life like today is your last day”.
I believe people procrastinate and waste time because to them that is far more enjoyable than what they should be doing. They don’t like what they do and therefore it’s a big obligation. This is not a good way to be.
It’s really thoughtful…Maybe we can’t realize that How much important it is…Lazyness , cellphone, Indefinite etc are caused of this…🤔🤔🙄🤔🙄🤔🙄🤔🙄🤔🤔😶😶😶😶😶😶🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😪😪😪😪😪😪😶😶😶😶😶😶😶😶😶
To distract myself from the fact that time is limited. I’ve been trying to spend more time mindfully though. When I think about the fact that there’s so much I want to do and so little time, it causes me intense anxiety and I feel overwhelmed. I used to peacefully accept that life ends some day but for some reason my anxiety has taken over lately, probably relating to my struggles with my faith life.
The thing with anxiety is that it messes up our mind to the point we don’t want to do anything because “what’s the point since we’re going to die anyway”. It’s dangerous because it stops one’s evolution…
I don’t think we spend it carelessly. And we can’t live by thinking, oh I don’t have time so I have to do everything right. That would be so stressful, in my humble opinion
Interesting question
But I wonder what really defines each concept (time wasted & time engaged)?
Since those answers will probably be as different as the real definition of love. Then I believe we can say that time isn’t really wasted, just invested differently across people.
Yes, I agree, but we would have to define helpful. Seating still in a quiet place for 6 hours can be considered just as “helpful” as a person who cooks, clean or work within that same time.

I feel uncomfortble to think of time as an asset that you have to invest in order to get a ROI. This way of thinking leads to reviews, forecasting, planning, preparation etc., instead of enjoying the moment. Zen-inspired people would say the “commercialization” of time is a waste because you will never arrive anywhere….being trapped in this vicious cycle of trying to achieve something in future by investing your time.
Is it really possible to waste time?
Don`t think of time that is only an artificial concept to measure and increase productivity during industrialization era anyway, ….just live. No need to be hyperactive and productive all the time.
you are good and enough as you are…it shouldn`t be necessary to invest time for achievements in order to be aoppreciated.

I’m not sure if this is related to being appreciated or to live your life the way you want. I don;t work to be appreciated. I work to create the life I want which is not how it is today. That wouldn’t be possible for me if I don’t plan my actions. Sure, if changes are not required or desired, living without planning is a great way to live. It’s all about what you want in life.

I hed to acknowlege that Targets, planning and achievements are not suitable to achieved contentment. There won’t be never enough achievements to fill the void. In fact, success is quite boring and created stress if you are not satisfied afterwards so that you are looking for the next challenges again and again.
Following this road, you are wasting your life. Dog will live a life without yourself. It makes more sense to reflect what you are truely looking for…and why you are not able to enjoy yourself …right here and now.
It is different if you cannot Pay your bills or have a very low living standard.

Haha! Yes. We keep giving the job over to our future self.

Because the striving and performing doesn’t always satisfy like rest does.

I face my mortality. That`s exactly the reason why I do not follow the trend of self-optimization, efficiency and increased productivity. That`s a waste of time. Who do you want to impress with your achievements? Why do you need it to stabilize or increase your sense of self-worth. Will you ever be ,satisfied with your performance? When will it be enough? Or do you need alll these time investments because you want to forget your mortality, missing capability to enjoy the moment or a lack of sense in life?

Maybe it’s part of being human… we’re aware that our time is limited, but we find it very hard to take control over it.

This is very interesting! I guess this is the same reason why credit cards and loans work so well in our society.
Time spent doing what you enjoy is never spent carelessly 🙂
Even though the effects of that is harmful (like smoking or drinking alcohol)?
Oooo… good point. But if those things were bringing harm to you, would they truly be considered something enjoyable?
Well, people consider them enjoyable… but maybe because they refuse to see the future influence.
Good point!
Great question. Probably because “bad things never happen to us” until they do…😢
It’s “funny” that we see examples of bad things happening everyday and everywhere, but we still think it can never happen to us.
Yeah…it’s “funny” 😏
Time seems limitless when all you have is time.
But when all we have is time, shouldn’t we pay more attention to it?

I try to use it wisely – I would think it is how you like to send your time – and how you enjoy it
I try that too, even though sometimes things don’t work as I would like to and time goes by in a different way I would like it to go…
I don’t think we spend it carelessly. And we can’t live by thinking, oh I don’t have time so I have to do everything right. That would be so stressful, in my humble opinion
I’m not sure if that’s how things should be. Maybe the idea should be like this “I don’t have time, so I better do things so I don’t regret it later”.
Yes, or not do things I may regret later. Time is a weird concept

I enjoy doing nothing as it clears my mindd
How do you feel after a “doing nothing” session?
