What Strengthens Your Procrastination?

You surely noticed that sometimes it’s harder to do some things even though you’ve done the a million times before. What has changed? You are pretty much the same and the situation is also pretty much the same, so why procrastination is stronger sometimes?

There are multiple reasons and all of them are related to us. Think about that even though everything seems to be the same, it’s obvious that some things are different, otherwise we would do the things with the same ease every time. So what makes procrastination different?

Our level of tiredness

The more tired we are, the stronger procrastination gets. If you think about it, it does make total sense. If you had to deal with stupid co-workers, rude cashiers and crazy traffic all day long, you wouldn’t be “thrilled” to cook something or to work on that extra project that has the deadline next month. But when all you have to do in that day is to cook or to work on the project, it would be easier compared to the first scenario.

The idea that there is another way

If you knew the deadline for whatever you need to do is in half an hour, procrastination wouldn’t exist. But if you know that you can find a way to do the same thing tomorrow or next week, procrastination is stronger. When there is no other way, procrastination disappears.

Prior behavior

Ok, this is a little bit trickier. Think about having an exam. If all your life until this point you only learned the night before the exam, you already have a habit in place. If you have this habit, do you really think you will learn now for the exam you have next week even though you know you should? I doubt it!

The lack of excitement

If whatever you need to do gives you nothing more than negative feelings that suck the energy out of you, procrastination gets stronger. No one looks forward to dive deep into a grey world.

The lack of a strong why

People won’t do things just because that’s what they have to. They’ll procrastinate until the very end. But when that why comes from within, people get stronger than the procrastination and they do get things done! If your why is superficial, procrastination will make you its b*tch, but if your why is your family or your future or whatever is strong for you, then it will be your b*tch.

There are some strategies we can use to fight this dragon, but we need to be willing to do it if our life is not where we’d like it to because of procrastination.

  1. It’s just me responsible for the health and wellbeing of three individuals…. And sometimes, I’m just too damn tired. That’s it.

    1. I’m not sure if that counts as procrastination since you usually do those things. It’s normal to be tired from time to time… we’re only humans after all.

  2. No matter how much I plan, I fail to do what I hate… Like folding clothes… That’s my Everest.. if I fold clothes daily… I’ll give myself an award😁

    1. Giving yourself an award is the way to slightly motivate yourself to do it. Yes, that’s not always enough, but sometimes it is 🙂
