Why do we dream? – Reblog

the impulse to write

Have you ever wondered why do we dream? Why some of our dreams are so easy to interpret, but others are so strange? Why do we need to have these “virtual” experiences? What is the reason we keep having them?

I think that the main reason of a dream is to blow off some steam for our brain. Why? Because most of the time we can’t express those thoughts (yes, dreams come from our thoughts). We either try to ignore the inappropriate thoughts (like sexual fantasies) or maybe we have thoughts that express some desires we have (like being a basketball superstar) and obviously they can’t be brought into our reality that easy (maybe at all). In these cases, our brain creates the experience in an environment where no one can see and judge it. Doing this, it brings some feelings we might have if the desire would come to life, and moreover, our brain can now take a break from that particular thought or desire.

Those are the dreams we can easily interpret. What about the strange dreams? Well, this is complicated. The dreams we think of being strange, actually make perfect sense for our unconscious mind. Every experience we had in all our life is stored in our unconscious. With all this enormous amount of data, our mind can do whatever it wants as long as it creates some relaxing sensation. I think that the only purpose of our dreams is to eliminate some things that are too uncomfortable to ignore (feelings that need to be felt). Nightmares are somehow related, but not the same and I’ll talk about those in a later post.

What’s the strangest dream you had?

  1. All dreams that happened to me are not strange. I used to think that they may be strange, not anymore because I know that this is my subconscious mind talking to me through the dreams. I always finding the meaning in my dreams, if I don’t know I look at the dream meanings and see that that’s what is actually could be. Love seeing dreams. 🌈🌈🌈

  2. I only seem to ever become consciously aware of dreams maybe once in a whole year. I must sleep incredibly well.

  3. I love the picture of a dream downloading pillow. I happen yo flush out a lot of ideas while dreaming Nd the only challenge is capturing the data. Keeping a notebook handy next to my bad seems to help.

  4. I’ve tried to Lucid dream for ages and cannot manage to do it as I always fall asleep. My fiancee suffers from sleep paralysis but Iv’e never had it! Any advice?

    1. I haven’t experienced it either so I can’t give you any advice unfortunately. To be honest, I’m a little scared about this concept because it gives us unlimited power in an endless world.

  5. I have recently become more conscious of my dreams by trying to write down details quickly before I lose memory of them. I have had some that are prophetic and many where I’ve awakened in panic. Last night I dreamed my car was stolen, woke up terrified.

  6. Don’t have strange dreams for they may be rehearsals for whats to come… 🙂

      1. I believe the dreams are giving you choices, either to venture into the sunlight and live and enjoy life following your heart or remain in the shadows, darkness, and never know true happiness… 🙂
