  1. To read, and further my studies. Spacing out and procrastinating eats away at the time, so it’s not so much as *not having time* but effectively planning and executing a schedule, which I am, frankly, crap at. Still trying though.

    1. I’m the same as you. Procrastination and time wasting has consumed years of my life. Here’s something I did that helped me. I set due dates on everything that I want to get done. I set goals to reach and dates to reach them by.

      This is my average week:
I work Mon-Fri 9-5, so most of that time is accounted for.
Weekday evenings are spent cooking and spending quality time with my wife and baby.
So I’m left with weekends, evenings when my wife goes up to the cottage, and after she goes to bed. Plenty of time without distraction.

      My personal work and approach:
I wanted to write a screenplay and a novel (possibly a novella) but I knew if I didn’t set goals, it would never get done, so I made a schedule.

I started on April 1, 2019, calculated roughly how long I wanted each piece to be and gave myself a due date of Dec. 20th for the first draft of each. I document my word and page count after every writing session and once a week I calculate how much I need to write each day (on average) to reach my goals. It’s really only about 1 page of the screenplay and about 150 words in the novel per day. But again, that is merely an average. Some days I’ll put down anywhere from 250-1000 words. That creates a little space and frees up a day or two to concentrate on writing a few pages of the screenplay. And back and forth I go. I have been able to keep myself on track with this method.

If I go over the allotted time, I can dip into my second draft time allotment. However, my due date for the second draft of each is April 1, 2020, exactly a year from when I started. So I certainly don’t want to go over the first due date.

I hold myself accountable and if I start slipping, I will sacrifice something, like sleep or a night out to catch back up. Thankfully this has not been the case so far.

Organization will be the key to effectively getting past your undesirable habits.

      1. This is so good, except that often I cannot write when I want to, as the flow is random and so cannot schedule it. Similar but of lesser turbulence is the case of reading. Net result : Good things are unfinished. Certainly sounds like I am not an RW type.

  2. Re-learning to play the guitar. My dream is to write like Jen Sincero and Tina Fey, and be a comedian talk show host who can play guitar like Conan O’brian. 😉

    1. Now’s the best time to do just that. Are you currently hosting anything? Podcast? YouTube interview show? Guitar takes time to learn, but perhaps that journey is worth documenting and making it the basis for your show. Have musicians with good personalities on that can hit the comedic tones you like to take in your writing, then you can discuss music and maybe they can teach you a few things.

Entertainment has made a drastic shift toward authenticity. What’s more authentic than someone who’s learning a new skill and making legitimate mistakes along the way.

    1. Ah ! Though I bear no perspective of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ days, here on the context of writing, I understand what “depending on the day means”.

  3. To work out more often. Because of its effects on the body, I cannot do it at any given time. For example, If I find 30 minutes at the end of the day to go for a run, I will be wide awake before I try to go to sleep. Or if I want to get some exercise during my lunch break, I would return to work in need of a shower. There are very limited windows throughout the day, and I tend to be busy during those times. For those reasons, I usually only work out during the weekends.

    1. Keep doing the end of day run. In time, your body and systems will get used to it. Lavender, a hot shower, or if you’re keen on cannabis, smoking a joint are all great ways to fall asleep.

If you choose the cannabis route, use a heavy indica if you like getting high, or CBD if you don’t.

  4. I assume the question is supposed to say “What does it seem like you never have time for?” or something along those lines.

I have all kinds of time. We all do. And if I need more, I can just sleep less.

What humans tend to be very good at is procrastination and even worse – excuses. I hear these ones all the time.
“I don’t have time because of the kids.”
“I don’t have time because of work.”
“I don’t have time because of (fill in the blank).”

Make time. If you sleep one less hour per day, you’ll gain 7 hours of time each week and approximately 30 hours each month. That’s 15 extra days per year. That’s a lot of time. Imagine if someone just gave you 15 extra days right now to get as much done as possible. You could reorganize your place, create something, read several books, or whatever makes you happy. And if you focus you’ll be able to use all that time effectively. Don’t get up an hour earlier or go to bed an hour later just to procrastinate or putter around doing menial tasks. Get to it! Do what you set out to do.

You could also look at what you do in your normal time off each day. If you work a 9-5 job, what do you do from 6 until bedtime? Maybe you could dedicate an hour or two in there to do something productive.

I do my best to take this advice myself. It’s tough, but I feel far more productive when I do. My main goal in life besides trying to positively impact the people around me, is to not have any regrets when I’m lying on my death bed, whether that’s in another 50-60 years or tomorrow.

  5. things I don’t want to do. Housework. 3 hours later after colouring in, messaging friends, reading…. still no hoovering done.

  6. I wish I didn’t have time for watching the garbage that is pushed out on NZTV…but the reality is that I do. More rewarding hobbies required. 🙂

  8. I don’t know. I think when school starts, I’m going to have to be very good about sticking to a schedule. I’ve gotten *most* of my distractions tucked away out of my office/study space. I think, it’s a bit of a toss up between getting back into the pool or spiritual time. With the number of pets we have, there will NEVER be a dust free day, LOL.
