Time Use

Hi everyone,

Let’s talk about how we can best pass time. How can we make sure that our time is productive and also relaxing?

My mornings are usually productive. I like getting up early. My afternoons are a bit lazy because I usually meet my friends in the afternoon. But I still can do work. My evenings are dead in terms of productivity. But I usually end up using my energy for the whole day and feel tired at home.

What I want to do is to make my evenings better spent. Not necessarily work, but do something else that will make me feel happy and also more useful. That is why I want to ask everyone how they spend their days and what are some activities you do to make the most of your time? Things that will not tire (rather relax).

I think making the most of our time is important because I want to be useful to humanity. I don’t want to just pass time. I believe our purpose in this life is to do the most of what we are given. It could be our intellect, our talent, our time etc. But if we use them all the time, our resources drain. So, we need to do things that are not targeted at using our sources at times. In that time, they can rest and next time we use them, they will be more in tune.

But that does not necessarily mean that in the time we do not use our sources, we have to kill time for no good (though that is also needed sometimes). We can find activities that will add new talents to us such as new hobbies, for example. It is these times that I want to utilize better.

Ultimately, I only feel satisfied with my life I am good to myself and other people and am trying to find ways how I can get this satisfaction. So, I need you guys’ help. Share how you achieve better time use and suggestions on what I can do with mine.

  1. Wanting to know how to make better use of your time is a great question as well as a pertinent one. It’s something I have been thinking about too especially as I get closer to thirty and time starts to mean something different. I find I am thinking not just about how I manage my “small” time (afternoons off, days off and weekends) but six months, a year or two years. I don’t have children yet but the prospect of having them is also something that has changed my perspective on time. Never really paid much attention to the idea that time means something different for different people but I feel I understand it now. Really interesting post; enjoyed reading it 🙂

    1. Thank you! I think we are on the same page. I always had the idea of a purpose but as I approach to 30 (and I am close), it started opening up new questions. I want there to be a bigger reason for me to do things. Things that will extend over time.

  2. To make evenings productive, you can take a walk or practice gardening. Being close to nature helps. Try different things each day and see what suits you.
Other things may be painting, drawing or singing 🙂

  3. spending time in activities that you find enjoyable, even if it is doing nothing, is still doing something valuable. being busy all the time does not make your life “better” but just busy. You are an amazing human doing amazing things and caring deeply for others. So kudos for living a life well lived! 🙂

    1. I do hope that I have a life well-lived! I agree that sometimes doing activities that we only enjoy (though may not be productive) is important and I do these as much as I can. But I think I still feel I have time left.

  4. Time, for me, must be managed and organized. Like you I am most productive in the morning hours and tend to need rest by mid afternoon (perhaps age is catching up to me). I work part-time and a good bit of my time is spent in the work place. I don’t watch a lot of television but enjoy interacting with others here on Word Press, which is both inspirational and intellectually stimulating. In order to have time to spend writing/reading I have to manage my time.

    1. I usually do my blogging and work during the day and I want to do other things in the evening. I can’t find something all the time, so I end up watching random things or sleeping. I want to organize my evenings.

  5. When I’m not studying (and right now that feels like ALL the time) I do watch Tv, but I also knit during that time. I don’t know why, but having my hands be busy seems to help me feel like I’m heading towards something. Probably a side effect of my grandmother.

  6. Hi

    Very good article as always.

I, however, disagree with you about how you put in the following statement: ” It could be our intellect, our talent, our time etc. But if we use them all the time, our resources drain. So, we need to do things that are not targeted at using our sources at times. In that time, they can rest and next time we use them, they will be more in tune”

Talent if not used it is lost. Equally resources if not used for the betterment of yours and that of other, it never grows.

Apart from these I agree with you everythings else.

As for an advice about satisfaction, we feel fulfilled when four things about our life overlap and balanced. And these are as follows: Work, family, community and our life.

You need time to make self improvement as you mentioned like: Learning new skills exercises and leisurely activities. These are very important to serve our familes, communities and in doing our works well.

If there are mismatch, no matter how good we become in other areas, we will never feel deeply satisfied in life.

Thank you once again for your thought provoking articles.

    All the best

    1. Thank you for the nice comment! I do think there is some imbalance in my life, which is why I am finding it hard to organize my time. Especially lack of family and community. I am away from my family and I am a PhD students, so we don’t have a good social group and social life.

  8. Nice post, I to get up early in the morning. I try to relax and not stress about things. I try to do drawings between 1-5hours a day and socialize with family and friends and watch movies.

      1. Your welcome Betul! Have a great day! I don’t know what time it is there, but it’s 11 23 am here so if it’s the evening or night, have a good night

  9. Time is the most important asset each person has. Every day when we wake up, each one of us has the same amount of time to live a meaningful life, to learn, to give, to share, to experience, to make a difference, to be who you really want to be. We all have just 24 hours a day to do all those things. How you spend your day is how you spend your life. You must make the most of the time because as it ticks by and the days turn into weeks, then into months, and then into years, life can pass you by before you know it. 10. I don’t think ‘better time use’ is the right concept .For me its mostly about how you loose most of your time…and end up managing the little time left.

      1. Exactly if we really assess our whole day..we can recover a lot of time .I’m at a point where i can say i have free time Xd

  11. A wise man once told me the best way to kill time was to work it to death. I have found that I do my best writing in the mornings, whether for schoolwork, comedy, or blog. I do my editing at night after the kids are in bed. I am trying to curb social media use and consumption because it is an endless void of anti-productivity in many ways.

    1. Nice points! You seem to have a good distribution of responsibility throughout the day. I guess that makes it less overwhelming? Like, you don’t think about doing writing in the evening once you do it in the morning?

      1. My day job is running a Tutoring Center at a college. My night job is grad school and running a martial arts studio. If I don’t get writing out of the way first, I generally don’t have anything left in the creative tank when I get home. I do keep a note card, pen, and open eye/ear for new ideas throughout the day though. You never know when a joke or blog idea will hit you.

      2. Oh, that is even more impressive! You have so many things to do, yet you do all! Kudos!
I agree that ideas may hit you in most random places!
