The Positive Side of Recent Weeks

Hi all! It has been a while since we met here and so much has happened in between! I want to talk about the situation lately but from a more positive perspective. I am not trying to downplay the tragedy that is happening but just to focus on the brighter side. Disclaimer: What I will say here may not apply to everyone, and I would like to hear your own experiences.

There are two things I was very happy about in general.

First is how quickly we were able to transform our lives, which gave me the impression that if need be, we are capable of making great changes. We are not as stubborn as I would have thought in keeping our routine. We were able to switch to online platforms in many jobs. Universities, companies etc. We obviously do not have the perfect way of doing things online yet and we are working on it. But that does not take away from the fact that the change was quick.

Second is how thoughtful people turned out to be in most cases, which gave me the impression that we are not that divided after all. I know a lot of young people I know are not going out mainly because they don’t want to give the virus to other people. That is a big sacrifice. Changing your whole life for others. Same goes for older people too. This is such a nice watch to enjoy.

As for the personal changes I have experienced:

First, I am pleasantly surprised at my ability to not go out and not being bothered by that. This is something I always had difficulty with. I live away from my family and I always wanted to go out because I felt more alone at home. But surprisingly, now I don’t feel it. I don’t know why.

Second, I picked up on habits that I was having difficulty establishing. I started meditating again, which was a welcome change. I started yoga again, which is also calming me and is a nice change too. I am talking to a lot more people than I would normally do. This is also good because we need to support each other in this time.

What kind of positive things have you noticed recently related to current coronavirus situation in general or in your own life? Have you started something doing something good that you did not have time before, for example? Let’s try to dig in the positive side of these events.

  1. You are absolutely right, Betul. No matter how rough things get, we always have a choice to focus on the positives (however simple they may be)!

During this bizarre situation I am thankful for:
    -A comfortable, well-stocked home
-The fact that it’s officially springtime
-Having an excuse to have no social plans

Thanks for another great post! 🕊

  2. Personally, there has not been that great a change in my daily life, except for the fact I no longer have to go out to work. My hubby has several health issues and is home bound for the most part. I am his care giver, so we haven’t been able to do much or go out much in a very long time. It’s all good. Practice for these days we are now living.

I love your positive takes. Positive messages are needed more so than ever. We will get through this if we stay close to the path of thoughtfulness and compassion for others. Stay healthy, satay safe.

  3. This is such a positive minded post regarding our global crisis! Thank you!

For me, I have a couple of personal gains that have been brought about by the necessity to change our routines! I struggle with being in crowds or places where many people congregate (e.g. public transport) and as such I have been spending a lot of money on taxis to take me to work and to other places… whilst making me feel better has been detrimental to my progress, my bank balance and global warming!! So in an effort to conserve my funds (in case of redundancy or unpaid leave later) I’ve been getting the bus without any problems which feels fantastic! My other gain is a feeling of being able to better plan for the following day (lunch prep; washing etc). So in amongst all the worry, some small gains. Keep safe everyone! Luna xx

  4. When you are mostly shut-in, the changes aren’t as visible. That being said, I notice I’m making a greater effort to be social. With family, with friends, with random strangers at the weekly grocery shop (bearing the six-foot distance in mind, of course).

  5. I think one positive takeaway is that people are putting aside their differences and helping each other. Probably the first time I’ve ever seen such a global effort where we’re all actually fighting against a common enemy. We’re all in this together. Nice post!

  6. Rightly said ! What you mentioned about sacrifices and fighting together..forgetting the differences ..true. One more thing is thay we realise there is something more to our lives than working or studying or the daily routine.

  7. I just published a similar post at melbatoast101.wordpress.com! I am more thankful than ever for SPRING, and somehow the fresh air and cacaphony of floral colors is even more poignantly beautiful in this time of uncertainty. I agree with you that people seem nicer somehow (for the most part – a few snarky individuals at my local Sprouts notwithstanding)…have a read if you can, good to see you continuing to blog!

  8. I’ve found the time to do some more reading as I’ve recently started on the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I know they’re essentially books for young adults but I read Good Omens after I watched the Amazon Prime series with David Tennant and I love Pratchett’s style of writing. Anyway, I also have had the chance to start on a new knitting project – a blanket for our new rescue cat. I’m also coming up with ideas for my own writing. I must say, it’s nice to be forced to spend some time at home and not have to scramble to look for work 24/7, as the government has suspended our mutual obligations for the dole. The only problem with it is that I recently had a job interview for what is essentially my dream job, and now I don’t know what is going to happen with that, since the university library is closed and is only online atm.

    1. I am happy you picked up all those nice habits! It is a good thing when we look at this way. With the job situation, a lot of things are uncertain, but I believe it will work out the best for you! Let’s wish for the best!

  9. Hi Betul, I love that you are able to take a brighter view of things. As you said, it’s not to diminish the tragedy, but in an act of gratitude for what we have. Over the past couple weeks I have learned to not take my daily routine for granted, socializing with coworkers at work and seeing friends at the gym. I’ve also been so warmed by seeing so many people reach out to help one another during these times. Big companies are donating supplies to hospitals, people are realizing what’s really important to them, and I feel like the world has never been so connected all trying to unite for a common cause. That’s the beautiful part of all of this. Thanks for the post! Ellen

    1. These are all very good points! We are all learning the value of things we always took for granted because they were always readily available. Thanks for the comment!

  10. Wife and I have noticed a lot more people on the sidewalks, walking dogs, walking children or just walking. Neighbors talking to neighbors. When I went for a hike, I saw a lot more cars at the trailhead than I’ve ever seen before. I hope this all reminds us that the insular way we were living life is not the only way.

  11. Loved your positive take on things at the moment ! Obviously there is a bad side of things, but in such difficult times we need to take a look at the positive ! I live in Italy and I have seen so many public figures/big industries donating so much money to help our country ! I see worldwide support for each other, even from people online you don’t know in person, it think this is amazing. Well done !

    1. This is great to hear! That there is so much more help people give each other! It refreshes my hope in humanity. Take good care of yourself over there! You have all our support!

  12. Thanks for sharing this. Let’s hope we all come out of this soon, unscathed. After a long time, I have got that break I had yearned for from work on edit my short stories collection. I hope to get it published next year.

  13. Reblogged this on Erin's Writing and Editing and commented:
There have been a lot of positive aspects. For one, I know I feel more appreciative of the chance to meet with people in person–from a six foot distance–and connect regarding the recent turn of events.
I find myself doing lots of high fives with my thirteen year old and hugs for my nine year old. I want them to have comfort in this strange time and perhaps I also need that closeness.
My family is the epicenter of my world. I am so grateful because I am able to be home with them and I can do my best to keep them safe.

  14. Great post! I’ve found that I really love working from home! I’m also enjoying cooking more, probably because I’m not trying to fit it in after long workdays or hours of errand-running. I’m finding more time to exercise, and I love being able to do something useful on a break from work (yesterday I pruned apple trees on my lunch break). I’m less stressed despite the scary times, which says something about the state of my pre-COVID-19 life.

  15. I definitely love your positive perspective, you really helped me word some thoughts.

I’d honestly thought, seeing the sunny side of things was me downplaying the tragedy and then I found your post. 😊

There is definitely an adaptive streak in humanity when change is necessary and this experience will be a great reminder for any major changes we may want to champion to improve our lives.

    1. Exactly! Now we can see we are capable of making sudden and radical changes. I believe everything has a good side, although seemingly bad, and maybe that is one of the good things here. This does not change the fact that the overall situation is bad.

  16. I love what you said about being alone but not feeling lonely. What a perfect time for some self-reflection and personal development! I, like you, see this as a wonderful opportunity to get back to the things that make us most happy. For me, that’s spending time with my family, working on my personal development, including physical and mental wellbeing, reading more and writing! Stay well!

  17. I’m curious how long did it take you to adjust/get used to all the change caused by Covid? For me, it took me a while until I started seeing the bright side of things. I feel like everything is going at a much slower pace, so in a way I feel less stressed 🙂 this is one of the positive things I’ve noticed

    1. That is nice! It definitely relieved my stress too! For me, my schedule before was not that different, so it was not a total shock. The first ten days, i was very happy and adapted ok. After that, I got a little bored and I started to make better use of my empty times. Now, I feel complete. So overall, it was back and forth but I am settling:)

  18. Great post! I think we need to see more about positive happenings to help subside what is currently taking place. I look forward to reading more of your posts!

  19. Thank you for this great post, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and learning from your thoughts! I have recently published an article on my blog about the positives of coronavirus which the media have neglected. If you have time, it would be great if you could check out my post and let me know your thoughts! Thanks 🙂

  20. As I said on your other post, this is so true! I’ve noticed that things that typically bothered me a lot prior to this virus, aren’t bothering me in the slightest now. I’m thankful that my kids are healthy, I’m healthy, my husband is healthy and the majority of our friends and family are healthy too. The littlest things just seem inconsequential now! The one thing I need to somehow squeeze into my day is some form of yoga though – I used to love it. Then I had two kids back to back LOL! Thanks for sharing!

    1. You should start with yoga soon! It is very relaxing! I also noticed that things that used to bother me seem very insignificant now. That is a good change!

  21. The best thing I learnt out is that there are a lot of things that we can do by staying at home.
Usually whenever we get some time, we tend to go out and spend on unnecessary things.
But now I cook myself, regularly arrange my home and get to spend a lot of time with my family. I will make sure I keep up to to this routine as much as possible even after things get better.

    1. I am thinking of keeping some of the habits I formed now too. I think it was important for me to see the value of home and I did not before.

  22. I enjoyed reading this post and would like to link it to a short post on our community wordpress account as I know we have people from all ages, walks of life who might need a boost at this time. I hope this is ok

  23. 1 thing is I started publishing my poems as the time passed and 2nd is getting to see my husband and child more everyday. We have tried more different dishes in a week more than we were doing a month earlier. So many positive things, so many! I am thankful 🙂
