To All The Friends I’ve Lost:

I simply want to say hello, although it’s been so many years.

Because even as time performs its cruel, relentless dance, I still remember you.

I remember us.

I still laugh when I think of all our ridiculous jokes;

how many fears, dreams and secrets we shared;

how many times it felt like Us Against The Big Bad World.

And even though our paths diverged, and we’ll likely never meet again, you are still a part of me:

You’re tucked behind a picture frame; hummed in once-forgotten lyrics;

You’re a phantom companion buried someplace deep within my heart, twisting and turning at a moment’s notice.

I smile. I accept.

I breathe you in and out.

Because somehow, some way, I love you still.

  1. Loved reading this, I didn’t want it to end. Maybe because I relate so much.
    I have however come to believe that some friendships are just meant to be temporally.
    I miss my old friends though…friends are the family we choose 🙂

    1. Thank you so very much for your kind words! They truly mean more than you know. And yes: I agree that some people are meant to be with us for only a short time. But it can still be painful to accept the loss. Thanks again for reading! 🕊

  2. Minimalism with maximum impact! Not many writers can say so much using such few words. Love the line: “You’re tucked behind a picture frame.” Very nice. I’m telling you, you gotta start sending this stuff out to some poetry mags. Thanks for this contribution on a universal theme and experience.

  3. Friendship is when you can not see each other for months, maybe even years, and fall into step like you just saw each other yesterday.

    This is a touching tribute to people that clearly touched your life in some way. Meaningful time spent with caring people. Thank you for sharing.
