ON BIG NOSES

(*Sniff*Sniff*) Do you smell that?

Imagine living in a world where the size of your nose determined the quality of your life. A large nose would guarantee you access to good schools, quality healthcare, higher wages and everything in between. Conversely having a small nose would automatically disenfranchise you from everything that people with big noses get to enjoy. 

For starters, you’d be required by law, to write to the Minister of Small Nose Affairs, explaining in detail why you should be considered worthy of accessing the aforementioned privileges. Even then, your chances of rejection are almost certain. 

You want to run for office? No, Sir. You nose is small. You want law enforcement to treat you with the same fairness they treat the rest? No, ma’am. They get treated better because they have a big nose. You feel the law should be applied equally to everyone? Outrageous! The law was designed by people with big noses for people with big noses. What about us? We are as much citizens as they are! Actually, you’re not. No? No, ma’am. You are three-fifths of a human being. How do you figure? Easy – you have a small nose! 

That’s the absurdity of racism.

It’s Black History Month!

It’s also the month (February 11th) that Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years. His crime? Would you believe– Demanding that people of all races be treated fairly. Like Martin Luther, he too was labeled a “terrorist” by a white government that was actually terrorizing black people! The nerve! 

The diabolical apartheid government of South Africa was the apogee of racism on the African continent. Housing, government policies, schooling, and even churches were racially segregated. 

31 years since Mandela’s release, racism continues to rear its ugly head. Racism is an issue we must continue to hold conversations on. As Mandela himself taught us;

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

      1. Coming to think of it, my nose would earn me presidecy! Ha-ha!

        But on a serious note, we’re down from battling racism to colourism. When will we discuss this? That light skin is better than black is now a thing is a worrying trend.

        Colorism is indeed a thing. A scion of the racism. The idea that the closer to being white, the better.

        You see it in film, music videos and even journalism.

        Thank God for Lupita, Gabrielle Union, Viola Davis, Idris Elba and many others who are unapologetically proud of their skin!

        But on a a serious note, I love the way you brought us in on this issue. Its the best way to explain it even to those who tolerate it. Would there be marathon ran under 2 hours if Kipchoge wasn’t given a chance…Mohammed Salah is leading the English premier league scorers chart at the moment, Kobe, Lebron..would all these people be known if not given an equal chance. The most beautiful thing is that what they are doing brings joy & happiness to all those watching them, no matter the race. This Racism monster should be slayed completely.

  12. You always have a way with words Mr. President 💪😅. This has reminded me of a tete a tete I once had with two gentlemen who happened to be pursuing law. So I indulge them and pose a question, “why would you want to pursue Human Rights? ” The first gentleman’s response was quite sarcastic. He said, “I want to be a lawyer so I can lie, break hearts and go to Nanyuki every weekend. “😂😂😂. Funny right? The second guy however, said something I would wish the society in utmost entirety embraces. His response was, “I pursue Human Rights to let the society know that the size of your skin doesn’t matter. Nether does one’s bank account nor the surname. We’re here now, let’s treat one another with dignity, with love. ”

  13. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. That statement is my take home. Just wow. I think almost all if not all of the world problems can be solved by love…I’m I right or I’m I right??!

  20. But don’t we already live in a world where the size of one’s ‘nose’ already determines the quality of life? And those with big noses just seem to keep on ‘pinching off the noses of those who barely have noses. Worst part- Pinnochio is the boss around this City of Noses.
