SnapDragon Speaks: On The Fade.

Time is a funny thing.

And by ‘funny’ I mean beautiful; relentless; healing.

It’s always there. . . but then it’s gone.

And as time passes, I see so many things begin to fade:

My once vibrant head of hair slowly succumbs to a washed-out shade of brownish-gray.

Sunburn. Scabs. Sadness.

They are here for a time, and then, little by little, they’re nowhere at all.

And in between this vanishing act, there exists a slow and lovely decline.

What was. . . is on its way out.

The inevitable tolling of the classroom bells no longer rattles my heart.

Those daggers of words she spoke are hidden behind the cobwebs in my brain.

The song is over.

The story has ended.

(sigh)

And so we start again.

  1. This is beautifully written, but I must admit that I don’t presently identify. My emotional responses feel dialed up a notch – the opposite of faded. Grief over a friend who died a year and a half ago (I thought I was “over it”). Angry rage over a stupid argument from years ago. It could just be me

    1. I’m so sorry for your loss, friend. And I have certainly experienced those moments of ‘dialed up’ emotion. While most things fade, some never do. Thanks for your insightful comment! 🕊

  2. Tender and wise. 🙂
Time is a magician that displays its tricks but never reveals its secrets. No one remains untouched. Time’s effects simply differ depending on how much it progresses.
Not stopping or waiting for anyone.
